D.I.Y April 2013This is a wood assemblage piece I did for my sculpture class. For the assignment we were each given a paper bag containing random scraps of wood from previous art projects. The goal was to create a piece using at least 75% of the scraps.
My first thought was that it's a lot easier to produce a significant work of art when the idea comes first and the materials are tailored to the concept, rather then starting with materials and trying to come up with a statement that fits them. So I decided to make a statement about this phenomenon as it crops up often in my Do-it-yourself-on-a-budget life style. I didn't spend any money, made very small modifications to a couple pieces, and only added 2 things that weren't in my bag. As my Dad would say "There's not a square corner in the place" but it makes a decent doll house none the less. |
All the Colors of the Alphabet December 2012So ever since I was little I have associated letters and numbers with certain colors. Just recently I discovered that there's an actual condition called Synesthesia that causes about 1 in every 200 people to cross associate colors, textures, letters, numbers, sensations, genders and/or sounds. The most common form attaches colors to certain letters and numbers. Mine seems to be mild enough that I only notice it when I have to color letters for a poster (I am always very tempted to color A's red even if that doesn't work with the color sceme) but I've heard of people that see colors flashing by with they read, and some experience even more intense sensations in connection with certain symbols.
Now, because there are so many variations in this condition (sometimes so mild that the person isn't aware of it) estimations on the number of people affected very widely from 1 in 200 to 1 in 100,000. But lets forget the numbers for now and just focus on the most common association: colors and letters. I'd like to know if there's any common theme in the colors people assign to different letters. If you notice that you do this, even if it's only with some letters, please fill out the Colors of the Alphabet form, and I will include your colors in the slide show. The Ruins April 2012
I built this ruined temple in our back yard to be used in the role playing events I host for my friends. I found a pile of bricks in the woods behind our house, and my dad and brother helped me dig up the rocks for the wall. We mixed up a wheelbarrow of mud to use as cement.
Family Mural June 2010
This was a crowd sourcing project I did with my family. I used chalk to draw random shapes on the inside walls of our shed, then the kids and I used up all the paint left over from other projects to paint each section a different color.
Mirror Star June 2009
I made this star to be a dramatic wall decoration in my best friend's bedroom. I cut the shape out of chip board, spray painted it black and glued on broken mirror pieces.
Felicity's Ball Gown August 2008
I altered a patteren to make this dress look like the one Felicity the American Girl wore to the Christmas ball for my sister JoyAlaia to wear on special occations. I left the bottom ruffle off untill she got taller so all together it has lasted her 4 years.
