I've been super busy with Art History homework lately, but I finally got a minute to upload my latest artwork so go check it out in Painting & Drawing and Sculpture & Mixed Media. Other then that I've been learning a lot of cool stuff in AH, my favorite so far is "The Clock" by Christian Marclay. It's basically a 24 hour movie that tells time, he used about 10,000 movie clips showing clocks or referencing the time and arranged them into a video mash up with a different scene for every minute of the day. I don't think I could do anything for 24 hours strait, but there's some great samples of the masterpiece on youtube so why not go check it out
So I'm almost done with my speed painting oil class... whew! That was a tough one. But I am really happy with the work I did. For the first two weeks we all did postcard sized observational paintings for the Art 4 Shelter fund raiser. I posted pictures of mine under the drawing and painting tab, but if you're interested I'd definitely encourage you to go to the sale at the Burnet Gallery in Minneapolis on May 2 from 6-9pm, you can find more info at www.art4shelter.org. Does anybody else associate colors with letters of the alphabet? I do, and apparently 1 out of every 200 people has some form of "synesthesia" where your brain makes associations between different colors, symboles, sounds, textures, and/or genders. Linking letters with colors is the most common form. If you do this, even if very mildly, or only with some letters, I would love for you to participate in my "Colors of the Alphabet" project on the sculpture & mixed media page. Here are pics of the vase I'm making in ceramics, and the shoes I embroidered as a Christmas present for my little sister. I also got pics uploaded of my cartoons and a couple of jewelry pieces that weren't up before because I'm entering them for a scholastic art award. I wanted to get better pictures when the ring was polished and the drawings were more finished, but I was in a hurry to get them up before this weekend. I'll get better pictures later... Man, I have too many projects going on at once! I would be looking forward to winter break except that I know there will still be stuff that must be done. Funny how it's always more fun to do the things that aren't required. So it's true that I have a couple of big due dates coming up, and maybe I should be spending AMTAP (as much time as possible) on getting projects done... But it just so happens that they're offering an after school ceramics workshop from now until winter break, and since I didn't get to take the actual ceramics class, I'm gonna go for it. It's only tuesday, wednesday, thursday, so I'll still have plenty of time monday and friday + weekends to get stuff done, and I think this will be a good break time where I don't have to think too hard. I'm in group 1 which gets to wheel throw for the first 5 sessions, and then hand build the second half. Our first session was last night. I couldn't center by myself, but everything else is pretty easy. So anyway, we'll just have to see what kind of fun pieces we get out of this! My digital self portrait is finished! True it's a whole weekend late, but Carl really isn't picky. Anyway, you can go check it out on my Drawing & Painting page. Stay Beautiful -Portia My digital painting self portrait is due Friday. I was having a lot of trouble getting Pixlr to do what I wanted, but I think I have it figured out now, so I should be able to finish in time. The next project is "impossible photography" so I have to come up with a clever way to merge two photos into something cool... We watched a TED talk with Erik Johansson for inspiration, but all I got from it is that the awesome stuff takes more time then I have. :/ Meanwhile I'm still polishing my jewelry projects. I'm hoping to get them documented and have pictures up by next Monday. So, not including social and academic obligations, that's another day in the life :P Just finished my first quarter as a new senior at Perpich. My Q1 art strand was Jewelry. That was super fun :) You can check out my pieces on the "jewelry" page. Q2 is Digital Imaging and our first project is, you guessed it, an online portfolio! :P I don't think I'll be doing much "studio art" beyond school, but for now I'll try to make this a cool place where you can check out my work and keep informed about future projects.
