Yellow Barn May 2013I had a lot of fun doing my sun set series and there was still an empty wall in my mom's room, so I decided to paint the yellow barn that we drive passed on our way to St. Cloud.
I didn't get to spend as much time on it as I wanted to, so I simplified the background quite a bit. Over all I think I prefer the postcard size over canvases. |

Sun and Snow March 2013Minnesota in winter. This is what happens when I have to frantically take source photos from a moving vehicle over the weekend. They actually turned out pretty good.

Observational Postcards February 2013These are the first observational paintings I've ever done. This was also my first experience with oil paints. It was definitely a challenge at first learning how much to copy directly and how much I could change. Also learning how to work quickly, because it really is easier to get a natural blend of color when you can paint wet on wet. Figuring out how to mix all the colors from a basic pallet, and discovering just how dark white can be.

Ideal Me November 2012This was a digital painting self portrait for my digital imaging class. I took a picture of my self and basically painted over it using Pixlr which is an online application very simler to Adobe Photoshop. Because I had had 0 experience with photoshop or pixlr before September I tried to use this as a fairly simple practice project. The shadowing was pretty hard for me. It was a constant struggle between softening the transition and learning to leave some edges hard.
(I am also wearing two of the rings I made in jewelry class) |
Portia Frank July 2012I choose to copy the style of Lisa Frank for my second self-portrait. Her work is very bright and girly, maybe a bit young for me now, but I loved it as a little girl, and I want to remember that growing up doesn't mean I have to abandon my favorite lime green.
I actually own everything I’m wearing in the portrait except the shoes. This gives it another element of myself since I don’t have very much freedom of face shape in this style, and it shows that Lisa Frank really is my style. I choose to use pastels for this portrait because I thought they would give me the smoothest look. |
Two Way Window July 2012This is a double portrait showing a stranger’s impression of me as well my own. I painted the design on a glass brick because, when viewing one side, you can also see a blurred version on what the other person is seeing.
A stranger might think I live in an old house in Paris with 12 little girls, because I have such a big family. From my perspective it’s more like a castle in a land far away, limiting contact with the outside world, but also offering many adventures that I couldn’t have elsewhere. The animals in the yard suggest that we live on a farm just because we live in the middle of nowhere. We do have some animals but my favorite part is the woods and wild flowers. I may be seen as a nun because I’ve never had a boyfriend, but I see myself as a perfect bride impatiently waiting for my prince charming. I used a traditional Swedish “cut out” style of art for this portrait because of my Scandinavian heritage. |
Reach for the Stars April 2012
"Ideals are like stars. You will never succeed in touching theme with your hands. But by following the light, like a sailor at sea, you will reach your destination" -A very wise person
This piece is a metaphor of my search for truth and perfection. The light of this world is very bright and spectacular, but it will only lead you to nowhere and frustration. It won't last forever either, and, when it sets, the star is the only unwavering guide.
